How to Find The Right Ring Size for Your Proposal

You saved, researched for hours and found the perfect engagement ring. So now how do you know what size to buy? Our experts offer a few suggestions that should help you get it just right.
The easiest route is to ask friends or family. If you’ve been discussing marriage for a while, your honey has likely talked about their dream engagement ring with someone close to them and mentioned their ring size.
If you are planning a surprise proposal, make sure you ask someone who can be trusted and won’t slip around your significant other.
The second option requires a little more effort. Look at the jewelry your darling wears already. Is there a ring they often wear on their left ring or middle finger? If so, wait for them to take it off and secretly bring it to your jeweler to be sized. If they only take it off for certain things, like exercise or sleep and you have limited access to the ring, get a bar of soap and press the ring in to make a dent of the circumference. Your jeweler should be able to use the imprint to identify the correct ring size.
*Remember* - if the ring is one they wear on a larger finger, you should likely size down a quarter or half size.
You can also snatch the ring for just a few minutes to find the size quickly online.
Don’t stress if none of the above will work for you. As a rule of thumb, it is better for the ring to be slightly large. Your future spouse will be able to at least slip it on in the moment and it’s much easier to size a ring down than to make it larger.
While there are no guarantees that our tips will guide you to the exact size ring needed, it should at least get you close enough to purchase one that will slide on when you are down on one knee and ask for their hand in marriage. If the fit is not 100% perfect, relax. Take it to be resized by your jeweler. After all, the ring is a symbol and it’s the commitment and love that matters most.
